Fogless Shower Mirror Buying Guide

Best Fogless Shower Mirror

Now that you’ve read some of the best fogless shower mirror reviews, it’s time to tell you what you should be looking for when you shop for a fogless shower mirror. It doesn’t matter if you use a rain shower head for a relaxing shower or a regular one, getting the right mirror can make your life a lot easier.

What is a Fogless Shower Mirror?

A fogless shower mirror is a mirror that is meant to be used in the steamy and foggy environment of your shower. It lets you see your reflection clearly without being obscured by condensation. These mirrors let you shave with confidence knowing that you won’t miss anything when you run the razor over your face.

What are the Benefits of a Fogless Shower Mirror?

The best fogless shower mirrors let you see what you’re looking at in the reflection without worry. They let you shave without missing any spots or remove makeup while in the comfort of your bath. Because they are shatterproof and usually not made of glass, you can use them without worry that you might injure yourself.

What to Consider When Buying a Fogless Shower Mirror

When you’re shopping for your next fogless mirror, you want to get the best shower mirror for your needs. Here are seven things to keep in mind to ensure you get the best fogless shower mirror for your needs and your lifestyle.

Best Fogless Shower Mirror
  • Mounting

When you look at your fogless shower mirrors you want to look at how they are mounted in your shower. In general, there are three possible ways for your mirror to be installed: wall-mounted, hanging, or freestanding.

o Wall Mounted - a wall mounted fogless shower mirror usually uses one of two things. The first method is by a suction cup. Suction cups are essentially dome or cone-shaped pieces of silicone that when pressed down, force air out and create a vacuum underneath. This vacuum creates suction which keeps the suction cup and whatever is attached to it in place. The danger is if something too heavy is mounted on the suction cup, then it can pull the suction cup away from the surface. This has the effect of breaking the vacuum and causing the adhesion to fail.

There are two ways around this. One is to use a larger suction cup which then increases the amount of weight that it can bear before failing. The second option is to use a locking collar that prevents the suction cup from lifting away from the surface.

You should remember that when looking at a suction cup mounted shower mirror oh, that suction cups will only adhere to smooth non-porous surfaces. That is because any other type of surface will allow air to break the vacuum seal of the suction cup.

The other method of wall mounting is by using double-sided water-resistant tape. This is similar to command strips as marketed by 3M. To use the strips you simply peel the backing from one side and attach it to your mirror. Then figure where you want to place a mirror, peel the other side from the adhesive, and stick it to the wall.

You have to be sure that you have installed the mirror where you want it because once it is in place, you generally are not removing it without some trouble. Some of the generic double-sided sticky tapes are quite a lot stronger than Command strips. That means that when you try to remove them they will resist, and in some cases leave behind a residue, or peel away paint and sections of drywall.

o Hanging - another type of mounting and insulation for fogless shower mirrors is hanging. The mirrors can hang from a hook that has been installed on your shower wall or hang from a chain or other type of cord. There are benefits and drawbacks to this type of mounting system.

If you use a chain, you need to ensure that the chain is made of a non-rusting or corrosion-resistant material. Otherwise, you will end up with some bad stains where the chain is hanging from.

If you use a cord, make sure that it can dry out adequately between uses. Any sort of natural cord material that is subjected to stresses and kept wet will eventually fail. Alternately, look for a cord that is made of a synthetic material such as paracord, or its equivalent.

Some mirrors are just hung from a hook on the wall. This means that the hook must adhere somehow. Usually, this uses a double-sided water-resistant tape. Again, the benefit of using a mounting system like this is that it can be used on any type of surface. Just be careful, because sometimes some of them are too strong and will damage the wall when removed.

o Free-standing - freestanding fogless shower mirrors are exactly that, they do not mount on your wall and they don't hang from anywhere they are meant to be set on a shelf and used.

The most obvious drawback to this type of system is that they are not firmly in place and you can knock them about quite easily. On the other hand, they are easily put away when you are done with them or you want to use them for travel. They are also exceptionally good for travel because you can set them down anywhere. A lot of hotels will frown on you sticking double-sided tape to their shower walls.

  • Temperature of the Water or Steam

Using a steam shower has health benefits, nobody can deny that. But, depending on the heat of the shower or steam showers that you like to take, you may want to avoid certain types of mirrors. Flat mirrors that are not in frames can peel when subjected to higher temperatures of steam. That’s because usually instead of being a mirrored glass they use a sticker like coating as a reflective surface.

In general, if your steam showers are usually above 105 degrees Fahrenheit, look for a fogless shower mirror that is inside of a frame.

Best Fogless Shower Mirror
  • Is it for traveling?

One important consideration is the portability of your mirror. Do you want to take it with you when you travel? If so, then look for one that can be installed and uninstalled easily. That means no fogless shower mirror systems that use double-sided sticky tape. Stick with free-hanging or suction cup shower mirrors. You also want to avoid mirrors that are too big. Additionally, a mirror that is strangely shaped and doesn't pack well should be avoided too.

  • Make Sure It is Shatterproof

In general, most fogless shower mirrors are not made of glass so they will not shatter if you drop them. But be sure that you don't purchase a fogless shower mirror that is made of glass. That is because a father shower mirror is suspended your wall and if something happens that causes it to slip and fall, you are now barefoot in a bathtub full of broken glass. That is not a good thing.

  • How to Keep the Condensation Away

It doesn’t matter if you’re shaving or taking off makeup, you don't want a mirror that you can't see your own reflection in. There are three ways that manufacturers recommend or design their fogless mirrors.

First, you get fogless shower mirrors that use a coating to keep them fog-free. Fog is, of course, small droplets of water that have condensed on the surface of the mirror. The droplets may be too small to see but they still are big enough to cause the reflection to become clouded. A coating on a fogless shower mirror prevents the condensed water from forming droplets. This is usually done by lowering the water surface tension so that they never form drops of water or beads. The most common way to do this is by spraying rubbing alcohol or isopropanol, on the surface of the mirror. This will make it so that the water cannot grip the surface of the mirror tightly and instead will flow off.

The second method is to heat the mirror at self. If you heat the mirror then water no longer wants to condense on a relatively cooler surface. You can do this one of two ways. The first is by holding the mirror underneath your hot shower water until the mirror warms up. The second method is by using some sort of reservoir behind the mirror that holds hot water. The hot water heats the mirror in front of it and prevents fog and condensation from forming.

The third method is a combination of the first two. You will see manufacturers who tell you to wipe your mirror with a soapy hand or hold it under the warm shower water. By using a soapy hand to wipe the mirror, the detergents and soap on your hand r making it harder for the water to stick to the mirror and so it will flow off. Likewise, if you hold a mirror under the warm shower water, the mirror will warm up and no water will condense on it.

  • Accessories

There's nothing like a few extra bells and whistles to make your fogless shower mirror truly yours. There are a few accessories that you may want to pay extra attention to.

o Hooks and Shelves - extra storage space is great. Most fogless shower mirrors will come with a shelf or a specially-designed hanging spot for your razor. Having someplace safe to put your razor so that you're not tumbling for it on a ledge somewhere is great and can save you from a sliced finger.

Best Fogless Shower Mirror

o Lights - another accessory to look at is the lighting. A lighted shower mirror especially when it's fogless can be great for making sure you get the last remnants of makeup off and that you've shaved all the right spots.

o Magnification - a shaving mirror that has a magnification will help you be more precise. While seeing yourself three or four times your normal size can be a little daunting when you're in the shower and your vision is a little obscured, the extra-large viewing image is helpful.

The difference between a fogless mirror and a heated shaving mirror
You might be wondering what the difference is between these fogless shower mirrors and a heated shaving there are. There are three main differences between the two types of mirrors.

  • Installation

Fogless shower mirrors use multiple methods of installation. But these are all temporary. The methods range from suction cups to double-sided waterproof adhesive strips to suspension chains.

A heated shaving mirror, on the other hand, is installed by attaching it to the neck of your showerhead. That way when you turn the shower on, hot water flows through the attachment and down into the mirror itself.

  • How They Work

Fogless shower mirrors usually have some sort of coating over the surface of the mirror to prevent condensation from forming. Some fogless shower mirrors required that you rinse the surface at least once to warm the mirror and prevent condensation from forming again. Other fogless shower mirrors have a water reservoir behind the mirror that you fill with hot water to essentially heat the surface of the mirror and prevent condensation formation.

Best Fogless Shower Mirror

Heated shaving mirrors are attached to the neck of the showerhead and diverter a portion of the hot water to flow behind the mirror. The hot water heats the mirror and the surface so that no condensation forms and the reflection remains clear.

  • Permanence

Because of how heated shaving mirrors are installed, they are mostly permanent installations. You can remove them, but to do so you need to disassemble your shower neck assembly. That's not very convenient so you will usually just leave the heated shower mirror there unless it breaks.

On the other hand, a fogless shower mirror is a temporarily mounted mirror using suction cups, a command strip, or even just free hanging from a chain.
