Steam Generator Buying Guide

Best Steam Shower Generator Reviews

Now that you have read reviews of the top steam generators, it's time to delve into a shopping guide. This guide will help you decide what the most important features of your new home steam shower generator should include. First however, let's talk about how steam generators create steam.

How Does a Steam Shower Generator Work?

Steam shower generators are fairly simple in design. Once you hit the appropriate controls on the generator it fi the generator with cold water. An electrical element inside the steam generator then rapidly boils the water. Remember that water boils at 212 degrees Fahrenheit.

As the water boils, it produces steam, or water vapor. The water vapor is generated from the boiling is thin dispersed by a steam head to fill your steam shower with steam that never gets hotter than 118 degrees Fahrenheit.

Steam generators usually use about 2 gallons of water for every 20 minutes of steam. This means that steam generators are a definitely a green way to bathe. Especially considering that a water-saving shower head would consume about 50 gallons of water in 20 minutes.

Things to Keep in Mind When Buying a Steam Shower Generator

There are numerous factors to consider when buying a steam shower generator for your home. Aside from the obvious considerations of where you're going to put your new generator, you should be looking at these 11 factors.

Power Requirements

You may find steam generators that claim to run off of a standard 120v outlet. This may seem like a great deal because you're going to save money on having a 240-volt line specifically run for your steam generator. However a 120-volt line rated for a 20 amp circuit is going to only be able to power at most a 2.4 kilowatt steam generator. That is not powerful enough to generate steam for anything but pampering your golden retriever with a spa day.

When looking at the power requirements you need a steam generator that will run off of a 240 volt line. Depending on the amperage draw, you can get a steam generator that could be as powerful as 24 kilowatts. While that is definitely overkill for your standard residential steam shower, knowing that you have the ability to run something that powerful is a comforting option.

One of the most important things for the best steam shower generators is properly sizing out what size steam generator you will need. The first thing you should do is measure the interior dimensions of the steam shower enclosure getting the length, width, and height.

Once you have those dimensions then you can find the cubic footage of your shower enclosure. What you didn't need to do is it just the sizing based on the materials. If you have natural stone or marble then you need to multiply your cubic footage by 2.0 if you have ceramic or porcelain tile then multiply by 1.35. You should also multiply by 1.35 if you are using glass block.

If one of the walls for your steam enclosure is an exterior wall for your home then you need to multiply by 1.1. If you have two exterior walls on your steam enclosure then multiply by 1.2.

Finally if your ceiling height is 9 feet, then multiply by a factor of 1.15 and if the ceiling height is 10 feet or higher then everything should be multiplied by a factor of 1.3.

For example let's say that you have a shower enclosure that is 7 foot by 9 foot by 3 foot. That gives you a base cubic footage of 189 cubic feet. Your steam enclosure is surrounded by ceramic tile but there are no exterior walls.

The ceramic tile means that we would multiply the 189 by 1.35 to get 255.15. Because of the ceiling height, we multiply that by 1.15. That results in a final total room volume of 293.42

The size of the generator you should be looking for is based off of that final total room volume tally. Here is a chart that gives you approximate sizes for the different volumes.

Generator Size Total Room Volume

7 kilowatts 101-250

10 kilowatts 251-450

12 kilowatts 451-550

15 kilowatts 551-675

Noise Levels

Steam generators should not be exceptionally noisy. But you should be aware that they will produce some noise. After all they are boiling water and producing steam. Usual noises will include clicks when the steam generator turns on and off as well as the sound of the steam traveling through the pipes. It is usually recommended that you watch reviews on YouTube or visit the showroom to get an idea of the noise level of the generator that you're looking at. After all there's nothing more disturbing than relaxing in your steam shower only to be jarred out of your reverie by the loud click of the humid activating.

Cleaning Features/ Auto Drain

Auto draining is a very nice feature to have for a steam shower generator. When you take a steam shower, not all of the water is boiled off into steam. That's because you don't want your heating coils exposed to open air while they are running. So what happens to this excess water when you turn off the steam? In an auto train steam shower generator, a valve opens and the water drains out and you don't have to worry about it. However, if you don't have Auto drain then you have manual drain and you have to remember to drain the reservoir after you are done.

Startup Time

There is nothing more disappointing than getting ready for a nice relaxing steam shower then having to sit and wait for 10 minutes while the steam comes up to speed. Steam powered generators with a faster start-up time will not leave you wanting. If you are patient, then you can save money by getting steam shower generators that have a longer start up time. But if you don't think that you'll want to sit around and wait, look for a steam shower generator that well heat water up quickly.

Aside from the usual safety concerns when you are using a steam shower, when purchasing a steam shower generator, you want to look for some safety features that it should have.

While every steam generator should have a pressure relief valve to prevent excessive buildup in the generator itself, you should also look for units that have a display status screen. And LED or LCD screen will let you know if there is a fault with your generator that needs to be corrected before further use. This display panel should be on the controller.

When it comes to steam shower generators, the old adage that you get what you pay for, is generally true. You are going to pay more for a steam generator that has nicer features. It is up to you to determine what features are more important for you and how much you are invested in them when it comes time to pay the bill. In general, you can get a good steam generator from a name brand like steam mist or Kohler, for around $1,000. When you start varying from that amount, you are looking at paying for extra features that are nice to have or saving money by going with an off brand.

When it comes to appliances like a steam generator, brand name can be exceptionally important. That's because these brands have been in business for decades and have a lot riding on their name. Now you can save a lot of money by going with a generic brand or an off-brand, but usually the warranty is lacking and you run the risk of the generator not quite being up to snuff. In general, stick with brands that have been in the business for a while. Koehler, SteamMist, acts are all great brands that have a long history of producing steam generators so you know that their products are worthwhile.

The warranty. For steam generators will vary from one year to 10 years to a limited lifetime. In general comedy controls and accessories will have a one year warranty limited to defects in materials and workmanship. After that, a longer warranty on parts is generally the norm. You should definitely be aware of what your warranty covers and what it does not. This is one reason why professional installation is so important. Most warranties will not cover a fault caused by improper installation.

When it comes to your drain fittings, you definitely want to make sure that you have a material that is able to withstand the pressure and temperature that the draining steam and water was subjected to. Building codes require that anything used for the P&T relief plumbing must be also suitable for potable water plumbing.

For the most part, you want to use brass or copper pipe only for all of your connections and fittings. Also make sure to use threaded unions because you may need to access the plumbing. A brazed fitting will not let you access it without cutting the pipe.

There are a number of accessories that you can get for your steam generator that can improve your quality of life experience. Various accessories include an aromatherapy nebulizer, a generator pan, or even an auto drain. You can even get your steam shower generator in different colors if you don't want to put it in a utility closet or similar hidden enclosure. You may want to get a shower filter if you have hard water as well to help prevent scale buildup.

Why Install a Steam Generator?

Best Steam Shower Generator Reviews

You might wonder why you should consider a steam generator for a steam shower in the first place. There are numerous physical and mental benefits to steam showers. Here are four of the key benefits that you will get from a steam shower.

  • Comfort - when you're stressed by the events of the day or you had a bad night's sleep and you just can't wake up, a steam shower can either relax or revitalize you. Steam showers will add to your comfort naturally without needing artificial stimulants or sedatives.
  • Health Benefits - a steam shower can actually help lower your blood pressure. The heat and moisture act as a vasodilator. This means that your blood vessels actually spend which in turn causes your blood pressure to drop. This can also help recovery periods after a strenuous workout as the lactic acid build-up is swept away more easily. A steam shower is also great for your sinuses and upper respiratory system. If you're dealing with allergies or a cold, hot steam can open up your breathing passages and bring you much-needed relief.
  • Good for Skin - steam showers are great for your skin. The heat opens up your pores and the resulting sweating helps clean them out. Combine that with some exfoliating and your steam shower is the recipe to have your skin looking and feeling as soft as a newborn's.
  • Relaxing - a steam shower at the end of the day can be relaxing and soothing, helping you and the day on a relaxing note. When you add in the possibility of mixing aromatherapy oils that can accentuate the relaxing powers of a hot steam bath, you have the recipe for a great night's sleep.
  • Property value - adding a steam shower to your home during a full bathroom renovation will add to your property value immensely. According to a mid-range $20,000 bathroom renovation will increase property value by over 67%.

Having a steam shower and generator is not all cupcakes and puppies. There are some definite drawbacks and issues that may make you think twice about getting a steam shower. Here are three of the most common complaints about steam shower generators that we have heard.

● Cost and Setup - by far the biggest hurdle is the initial cost of the steam generator. Depending on the model you choose, the size, and the additional accessories and features you could end up spending anywhere from $1,000 to $3,000. While in most cases you can get some sort of financing to help ease the blow, that doesn't change the fact that it is a cost that you still have to absorb either immediately or over the next few years. However, keep in mind that you are going to recoup a lot of these costs simply because of the addition to your property value.

● Safety Issues - pretty much every modern steam shower and generator are safe. But that doesn't mean that you shouldn't still be concerned because you are dealing with steam that is nearly a hundred and twenty degrees. The steam inlets in your steam shower will get extremely hot and can cause a contact burn if you are not careful.

Other safety issues are mainly related to improper installation, and as long as you ensure that your steam shower and generator are installed properly, there should be no real safety issues to be concerned with.

● Installing - installing a steam shower and generator is not for the faint of heart. If you have never done any DIY projects yourself, you would be best served by getting a professional team. Remember that you not only need to install the plumbing for your steam shower, but you also need to run the appropriate electrical lines. There is a lot involved in ensuring that your steam shower enclosure is also moisture proof and that you won't just be venting steam all over your house. After all, if you don't contain the steam adequately, it will penetrate your walls leading to moisture damage, and eventual mold and mildew. That will lead to major structural damage which will cost more than a pretty penny to repair.

7 Things to do Before You Start to Install Your Steam Generator

Best Steam Shower Generator Reviews

Installing a steam generator as a DIY’er can be confusing or simple depending on your level of expertise. One thing that should never be confusing is planning your steam shower before you pick up a single tool. Here are seven areas where you should be planning to get the most out of your next steam generator.

  • The first thing you need to do is play on your steam shower installation. Remember, you can go as big as you want, creating a steam shower room for 4 people, or go small and create a small one person steam shower. However you choose to go, it is extremely important that you plan appropriately. For one person the minimum size room that you should consider for a steam shower is 3 ft. by 3 ft. by 7ft. that is enough space for someone to stand comfortably with enough room to turn around. For a steam room, you should plan on an 8 foot ceiling. Remember that the higher the ceiling is, the less steam that will be around you. That's because steam rises, so you want a 7 or 8 foot ceiling to ensure that the maximum amount of steam stays where it should.
  • The next step is to think about where you are putting your seating. And general your seeds should be 18 inches high with a minimum depth of 15 in. If it's just for one person you could even get a simple stool or a shower seat that folds and stoves against the wall.
  • Next think about where the controls are going to be located. They should ideally be placed 4 to 5 ft. above the floor and near the seating location so that they can be accessed easily. You also want the controls opposite from the steam vent so that you get an accurate temperature reading. If the controls thermostat is too close to the steam vent, you will not get an accurate temperature reading.
  • Once you have planned the space, you need to plan the plumbing connections, the electrical system, and where the steam generator is going to be located.
  • At this point, it's time to start thinking about what materials you're going to use to waterproof and line your steam room. It is best to choose non porous materials such as acrylic or tile so that you can get as efficient a steam generator as possible. Also think about any added features you want for your steam room.
