Steam Shower Buying Guide

Best Steam Showers

Now that you've had a chance to see the steam shower reviews, it's time to talk about what you should be looking for when you're actually shopping for a great steam shower system. First, we will discuss what a steam shower is and how it works, then we're going to discuss some things you should keep in mind to make sure you get the best steam shower possible for your needs and your lifestyle. After all, as attractive as a Jacuzzi tub sounds, if you have mobility issues, getting in and out will present a definite challenge.

What is a Steam Shower

A steam shower is much like your regular shower but its primary purpose is to dispense hot steam instead of water. Now steam showers do have traditional showers built-in, for those days when you don't feel like taking a steam shower or when you need to rinse off after your steam spa adventure.

The steam that comes out of your steam shower is usually between the temperatures of 95 degrees Fahrenheit and 118 degrees Fahrenheit. That ensures that you get the most health and mental benefits of a steam shower without worrying about being burned. Your steam shower will have a stool or a foldable seat where you can sit down and relax while the steam works its magic.

Best Steam Showers

The heart of a steam shower is the steam generator. This is a special appliance that takes cold water in and heats it in a boiling chamber until hot water vapor and steam are produced. It then goes to a diffuser which causes the vapor to condense as it cools it down. That cooler steam is then pumped into your shower for you to enjoy. In general, most steam generators require a 220-volt line, which means you do need to run a dedicated line from your circuit breaker. However, there are steam generators that can run off of a 110-volt line.

These steam showers are standalone kits. This means that you assemble them and they build it into a water and moisture-proof shower. Some are rectangular and meant to sit in the place where you removed your built-in shower. Others are corner units and sit in the corner. All of them are quite heavy, so another thing to watch out for when you install them is to ensure that your floor joists in your bathroom are capable of bearing the weight.

Things to Keep in Mind

Now that you know what a steam shower is and a rough idea of the basics oh, here are some things that you should definitely be thinking about when you purchase your stand-alone steam shower. Whether it's the actual size of the unit, or where it is meant to be placed, or even what it's made of oh, here are 19 things to keep track of.

Best Steam Showers
  • Door Fit

Door fit is very important when it comes to steam showers. After all, you want your steam shower to be moisture and steam proof so that you don't get moisture damage to the rest of your bathroom. However, you also want to look at your door and how it opens concerning the rest of your bathroom. Some doors are sliding, and some open right to left or left to right.

Consider if the door can be reversed or if the steam shower comes in both a right and left-handed version. That is in a right-handed version the controls and drain are on the right-hand side and the door usually opens right to left. In a left-handed version, the controls and drain are on the left-handed side and the door opens left to right. Some of the more popular steam shower brands like Ariel do this.

The size of the door in standalone steam showers is usually fixed because it is a kit. However, you may be able to have a door custom-made that will still fit your steam shower; you just need to ensure that the entire assembly area maintains its moisture-proof barrier.

  • Jet Location

Water pressure jets are great for massage, and also just for rinsing off after a long steam shower. Look for a shower that has between 6 and 10 water pressure Jets. You don't want more than that because then the water pressure will fall off significantly, and you're not going to get so much a jet as just a trickle.

Also, look at where the Jets are located if you get a Jacuzzi tub combination unit. You don't want them all at your back, but having one or two water jets that provide Hydro Massage at your spine, can be a great way to relieve stress. Another thing to check, especially in a two-person shower, is how many water jets can be activated at one time. That means can you have your jets on at the same time that the other person has theirs on? Again this may be limited if you have a high number of personal Jets because of pressure drop off.

  • Vapor Resistant Enclosure

It's not just the door that needs to be resistant to vapor and steam. The entire unit should also be vapor resistant to prevent moisture damage. You also need to ensure adequate venting from your steam shower and the steam generator. Steam generators produce waste vapor that needs to be handled and treated appropriately.

Your steam generator should be close enough to your steam shower that you don't have to worry about installing a vapor retardant barrier for a very long distance. In most cases with these stand-alone units, the steam generator is placed in the floor void or the void between the Jacuzzi tub and the external wall. There will always be some steam that escapes when you open the door, so look here to know about choosing an exhaust fan for bathrooms.

  • Size and Height of the Unit

Not everybody is 5 ft. 6 and weighs 150 lb. look at the size and height of your perspective steam shower so that you can be sure that you are going to be comfortable sitting in it. You may be limited in your selection if you are exceptionally tall. Also if you have a concern, check the weight rating of the seating and the floor.

Best Steam Showers

Most manufacturers will respond to a simple query and let you know what the tub or shower is rated to hold. You also want to be sure that your perspective steam shower is going to fit in the location you want to put it in. That could change your proposed bathroom remodel and refit depending on what style of steam shower and what size you want.

  • Is the Flooring Slip-proof

For steam showers in most cases, the floor is going to be texture to be slip-proof. But what about a Jacuzzi tub. You want those two still have the slip-proof coating but not be so rough that they are uncomfortable to sit in. For steam showers, you can always increase the slip resistance by putting in the rough grip stickers. This is something that you should always pay attention to because steam can make acrylic surfaces extremely slippery. For steam showers with natural wood flooring, the wood should provide sufficient traction when it gets wet, but you may wish to invest in additional traction.

  • Generator Size

The heart of any steam shower is the steam generator. You want to make sure that your steam generator is powerful enough to fill the space with steam quickly, but without overwhelming it. In general, for a single steam shower for home that is self-enclosed, you should look for at least a 3-kilowatt steam generator.

For a two-person unit, you want something more powerful which would take you to the 6 kilowatts in generators. The reason you need a more powerful steam generator for two people is it just because you're feeling more space, it's because you're going to be losing more steam based on condensation and the cooling produced by two bodies. If you’re curious about how steam generators work, look here where we have several steam shower generators compared.

  • Shower Material

You want a shower to be made of a material that doesn't just look good but also has thermal insulating properties. You don't want your showers to be built out of something that will leak heat which will cause your steam generator to have to work extra hard to maintain the temperature and pressure. Glass is an excellent material for steam showers.

Metal, on the other hand, is not. For the Jacuzzi tub base, acrylic is the most common material. This is a great choice especially because they reinforce it with fiberglass to give the tub strength. Also, there is an air void between the wall of the tub and the external wall of the steam shower which provides additional insulation against heat loss.

  • Water Usage

Steam showers and steam generators use water. In general, you're going to see about 2 gallons of water used for a 20 to 30 minutes steam shower. Pay attention to how much water your steam shower uses, because you don't want to increase your water bill too much. You also need to take into consideration how much water is the overhead rainfall showerheads and the handheld showerheads use.

And if you get a Jacuzzi tub, make sure that it has heaters that keep the water warm as it recycles so you don't have to continually put hot water back in to keep your Jacuzzi warm.

  • Seating

For steam showers that don't have Jacuzzi basis, you want comfortable seats, but you also want them to be able to be moved out of the way. And most cases you can get removable stools, or fold down stools. If you are on the heavier side, a fold-down stool might not work because of the load-bearing maximum.

Look for seating that has a comfortable cushion that is also moisture resistant. The last thing you want is for your seat cushion to become sodden with water and become a Haven for mildew and germs.

  • Safety

Definitely look at the safety features for your steam shower. Some of the more common things you want are overheat protection which makes sure that the steam generated by your steam shower does not get too hot. You also want to look for a low water shut off so that if for some reason water stops flowing to your steam generator the heating elements don't stay on and damage themselves.

Also, look for over-pressurization protection. That means that if the steam outlet gets blocked your steam generator doesn't keep producing steam which will cause the heating vessel to expand and eventually rupture.

  • Light and Scent Therapy

Best Steam Showers

Aromatherapy and chromotherapy are great ways to enhance the physical and mental health benefits of your steam shower. Make sure that you do a little bit of research on what do the different colors are supposed to do. For example, orange and red are invigorating colors and you probably don't want to use those just before bedtime.

Also, invest in high-quality essential oils when you use your aromatherapy unit. And as a safety measure, never place essential oils that have not been diluted on your bare skin. Some calming essential oils that you may want to put in your repertoire are lemon balm, lavender, and mint. Lemon balm is an energizing scent, lavender is a calming sense, and mint is great for when you have a head cold or your sinuses are a little plugged.

  • Other Features

Steam showers have a ton of other features that can make or break a buying decision. From built-in FM radios to televisions, you don't ever have to be bored while soaking in the warmth. Some showers even allow you the comfort of an infrared sauna installed at home. It is worth taking a look at all of the options available to you from the top-rated steam showers that you look at.

  • Color and Design of Unit

Because acrylic is easily dyed, if you get a unit with a Jacuzzi tub base, you can get one and pretty much any color you desire. Don't think that you have to settle for a plain white tub. Additionally, a lot of times the tempered glass will be dyed blue or a smoky color to enhance privacy. You can also get the glass frosted if you like. You don't have to be constrained by what you see on the showroom floor. Talk to the manufacturer, and a lot of times you will find that additional colors are available, albeit for an increased cost.

When it comes to the design, there are some that are corner steam showers, rectangular steam showers, and the oval tub/shower combination. The different designs have definite placement requirements, which will affect your overall strategy.

  • Warranty

Look for a good warranty.Mostmanufacturers’ warranties will last for 1 year and deal with manufacturer defects on the entire southern clothes steam shower. After that, they will likely just cover parts. Some steam generators are covered for a long number of years. Also, make sure that you know what the warranty covers and doesn't cover.

  • Budget

For a self and close steam shower unit you are probably not going to spend less than two or three thousand dollars. As you added more features the price will climb to whatever your budget constraints are. But the initial cost of the unit is not the only cost to consider. There's also the cost of installing. And you need to ensure that you figure that cost into your overall budget as well.

If you're not comfortable with installing and assembling the unit on your own, there is the cost of the assembly and contractors. Because there's electrical work, you need more than just one person. You will want a licensed electrician, a licensed plumber, and likely a consultation by a carpenter. This may mean that you hire a general contractor who has people like this working for them already.

  • Showerhead

After a steam shower, you will want to rinse off. That's because as cleansing as a steam shower is, you will still want to take a regular shower. Rainfall showerheads are great for simply rinsing off but they are not so great for washing your hair. Look for units that have more than just a rainfall showerhead but that also have a handheld showerhead that has adjustable outputs. Some of the handheld showerheads will also have massage pulsing which will allow you to work out the kinks in areas that the wall-mounted showerheads can't reach. If you want to know more, here’s a list of showerheads that will amaze you.

  • Controls

You want the controls for your shower to be easily understandable and easily used. You also want to make sure that they are moisture-resistant so that as you use your steam shower, they will not become damaged. If you have a Jacuzzi tub, look for a steam shower that comes with a remote control. It might seem a little silly at first glance, but there's nothing more jarring than having to stand up out of a nice comfortable soak just so that you can turn the volume on the radio down. Pay attention to how the entire shower panel system is designed as well. You want one that’s at a comfortable height to use.

  • Connections

This refers to how your steam shower is hooked up to water and power. You want the fittings to be standard rather than anything exceptionally different. Standard fittings mean that it's easier for you to find the right connections, it will be cheaper to have it installed if you hire somebody, and it will be easier to swap parts out. Also, look for threaded fittings. We will cover why a little later in this buying guide.

Benefits of a Steam Shower

Now that you know what to look for when you are shopping and pricing out your steam shower, you might wonder what the benefits of owning a steam shower are. There are numerous physical and mental health benefits, as well as a monetary benefit. Doing a high-end bathroom renovation that includes installing a steam shower unit can add up to 56% of the renovation cost to your property value. So, aside from the benefit to your wallet, here are four ways that a steam shower can improve your health.

Best Steam Showers
  • Blood Circulation

Moist heat has a pronounced effect on the blood flow just under your skin. Essentially the steam causes the blood vessels to open wider which reduces your blood pressure and increases the blood flow promoting healing of scratches, skin ulcers, and other injuries. It is most effective when used for longer than 10 minutes and can lead to a blood flow increase of up to 450%.

  • Sore Muscles

Because steam helps increase your blood flow, it also helps promote the healing of injured muscles. Whether it is just after a workout when you have a buildup of lactic acid and other waste products, or you have slept on your side wrong, a steam shower promotes the relaxation and healing of those sore muscles.

  • Better Skin

My steam causes the pores in your skin to open wide. The heat then causes you to sweat which flushes the dirt and your pores. A 20-minute steam shower we'll have a pronounced effect on the health and youthful glow of your skin. Just make sure to follow it up with a regular water shower to rinse away the dirt and oils that are exuded.

  • Helps with Insomnia

A steam shower will relax you. Pair that up with some aromatherapy and the appropriate chemotherapy, and you have a recipe for helping get your body ready for a long and restful night's sleep. One of the best calming scents for aromatherapy is lavender. Not only is lavender a natural healing plant, but the smell has also been scientifically proven to cause relaxation in study participants.

Here are four tips however that can make your installation a lot easier.

  • Read the Instructions Twice

The first thing you want to do before you attempt to assemble your steam shower is to read the installation instructions that came with it. Read the entire thing from front to back.

Then take notes of anything that you might be confused by, and read the instructions again so you can attempt to clear those questions up. The last thing you want to do is be 14 steps in, and realize that you aren't sure how a piece fits with another piece, or how you're supposed to wire in the lighting. This leads us to our next tip.

  • Don't Be Afraid to Ask for Help

Let's face it. Not all of us are comfortable running electrical wiring from your basement or fuse panel to your renovated bathroom. If there's anything that you aren't comfortable with, hire a professional. There is nothing wrong with hiring somebody to make sure that your steam shower is installed properly. And improperly installed steam shower is not just a health risk; it can also cause massive damage to your home.

  • Make Sure Your Floors Can Take the Weight

Steam showers are heavy. Some weigh over 500 pounds. Do you need to take an honest assessment of your floor and make sure that it can handle the weight? If you're installing your steam shower on the first floor on a concrete slab, then you don't have to worry about that. But if you are installing on a second floor then it might be worth your while to have a contractor come in and look at the joists and recommend any additional bracing that will help. The last thing you want is for your second story steam shower to all of a sudden end up being a first-floor steam shower in the middle of your living room.

  • Use Threaded Fittings

Let's face it, sometimes things just break or go wrong. When installing the water lines, it can be worth your while to invest in threaded fittings rather than having your pipes glued or soldered. A threaded fitting means that you can easily detach your shower from the water lines without much fuss. Otherwise, you will need to cut the pipes and cap them. A threaded line also means that it's easy to replace a part that has broken five or 10 years down the line.
